When it comes to making historical aircraft accessible to the public, no one does it better than the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). The members of the CAF honor the heroes of the past by inspiring the heroes of tomorrow, fully dedicated to this essential mission. They inspire millions by introducing them to their aircraft and the people who built, piloted, and maintained them.
One of the latest additions to the CAF aircraft fleet is the Douglas AC-47 Gunship, known as "Spooky 086". The aircraft was assigned to the Gulf Coast Wing unit operating in Texas; its members invested significant effort in preparing the aircraft for its debut on the American historical aviation scene. The AC-47 represents a great example of aircraft designed for close air support, which excellently proved itself during the Vietnam War.
This particular aircraft was built in 1944 as a C-47B version and later entered service under the designation R4D-6 with the U.S. Navy. Although this specific plane did not serve in Vietnam, the CAF organization aims to highlight the versatility of this type through this project – it is precisely this versatility that allowed its conversion into a flying platform for fire support, 25 years after its original production.
"Spooky" aircraft were able to stay over the battlefield, circle around it, and concentrate fire on targets, making them an effective means of combating insurgents in the early stages of the conflict. The designation on the aircraft "Spooky 086" does not refer to one specific aircraft that participated in combat, but serves as a tribute to the 86 crew members of AC-47 aircraft who lost their lives during the Vietnam War.
