Template information

The Bristol Beaufighter TF.X was a specialist anti-ship attack variant, known unofficially as the "Torbeau". Equipped with a devastating combination of deck guns, rockets and an under-hull torpedo, these aircraft formed the striking force of Coastal Command. The aircraft from the Dallachy Strike Wing fought extremely dangerous battles with German convoys along the Norwegian coast, drastically cutting off the Third Reich from key supplies of raw materials for the war industry.

This particular model is LZ451, codenamed EE-M and nicknamed “The Ancient Mariner”, flown by Squadron Leader Christison of No. 404 Squadron RCAF in October 1944. The aircraft wears the distinctive Coastal Command naval camouflage, complete with a unique, very popular pattern on the left side of the nose. The Beaufighters’ exceptional firepower and quiet operation of their Hercules engines earned them the respected nickname “Whispering Death” from their Japanese enemies.
