Corgi AA36312 - 1:72 Fairey Swordfish Mk.I, RAF P4154 / 4M, Battle of Taranto, November 1940
The Corgi The Aviation Archive series is a collection of detailed metal aircraft models, designed mainly for the discerning collector. Limited edition with numbered card.
Template information
The Fairey Swordfish, nicknamed the "Stringbag" by its crews for its canvas construction and abundance of wires, looked outdated even at the time of its creation. Nevertheless, this robust biplane made its mark in aviation history with extraordinary combat successes. It was able to operate reliably from aircraft carriers in extreme weather conditions, carried heavy torpedoes, and played a key role in eliminating enemy submarines and protecting Allied convoys.
This model faithfully depicts P4154, designated 4M, of No. 815 Naval Air Squadron, operating from the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious during Operation Judgement. On the night of 11/12 November 1940, twenty of these slow-moving biplanes attacked the Italian battle fleet anchored in the heavily defended port of Taranto. The attack completely changed the balance of power in the Mediterranean and became a direct tactical inspiration for the later Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
