Information about the prototype

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a single-seat twin-engine fighter and fighter-bomber that was among the best Allied combat aircraft of World War II. It was deployed in battles in both Europe and the Pacific. The Germans nicknamed it the "two-tailed devil." The prototype of the aircraft first flew under the designation XP-38 on January 27, 1939, but was destroyed in an accident on February 11. Nevertheless, the Army Air Corps ordered 13 pre-production YP-38s from Lockheed, which were produced until March 1941. In August 1941, a delivery of thirty-six units of the P-38D version began. A whole range of various versions of this aircraft was created.
