Template information
The Yakovlev Yak-1b was a major upgrade of the original Yak-1 fighter, responding to the experience gained during the early stages of the fighting on the Eastern Front. The most notable change was the radical reduction of the fuselage ridge behind the cockpit and the installation of a new teardrop canopy, which provided the pilot with excellent 360-degree visibility. In addition to the aerodynamic refinement of the airframe, the aircraft was equipped with a more powerful M-105PF engine and improved armament consisting of one 20 mm ShVAK cannon and one 12.7 mm UBS machine gun, which made the Yak-1b an equal opponent for the German Messerschmitts.
The Yak-1b became a symbol of Soviet fighter aviation during the crucial battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, where their agility and ease of control, even for less experienced pilots, were fully demonstrated. Many Soviet aces achieved their first successes on these machines, and the Yak-1b also formed the armament of elite units, such as the women's 586th fighter regiment or the famous French Normandie-Niémen squadron. Although their construction was mixed with the use of wood and canvas, their reliability and performance at low altitudes made them one of the most successful Soviet fighters of the entire war.
