The Bell P-39 Airacobra is an American fighter aircraft from the Second World War. Its evaluation is very contradictory - in the US and Great Britain air forces it had a very bad reputation, on the contrary it was highly rated by Soviet pilots. It was a machine of a very unusual and interesting concept.
The engine was located behind the cockpit, close to the center of gravity of the machine, with small torques improving the maneuverability of the aircraft. At the same time, the propeller in the nose of the aircraft was driven via a long connecting shaft, passing under the pilot. This allowed the barrel armament to be concentrated in the "empty" nose.
Another unusual feature was the use of nose landing gear. These features attracted potential buyers, especially since Bell promised very interesting performance in advertising materials. The maximum speed of the production aircraft was supposed to be around 644 km/h (400 mph). This also led to the type designation P-400, which was used for the original British Airacobers.
