The AW-101 Merlin is a medium-duty multi-role helicopter developed by AgustaWestland (now Leonardo) in collaboration with Westland Helicopters. It was designed and developed based on the requirements of the British Royal Navy and the Italian Navy to replace the now obsolete SH-3D "Sea King". It entered service in early 2000 and its primary role is as an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter. However, due to its operational flexibility, it is also suitable for troop transport, maritime search and rescue (SAR) and combat SAR (CSAR) missions in various configurations. It is capable of operating in extreme weather conditions and in all operational environments. The Merlin is powered by three turbines and has a maximum speed of 310 km/h and an operational range of over 1,350 km.
