Template information
The introduction of the Macchi MC 202 Folgore was a significant development for the fighter squadrons of the Italian Regia Aeronautica. Stylishly designed from an aerodynamic point of view, it was equipped with a powerful German DB 601 engine, manufactured under license by the Italian aeronautical industry. The engine and the aircraft's overall performance provided the Regia Aeronautica with a fighter capable of actively combating Allied fighters. Its flight performance compared to the previous generation of radial-engined fighters, such as the Fiat G-50 and Macchi Mc-200, was actually much better. It was agile and fast (it could reach speeds of 600 km/h) and in early versions it was armed with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns mounted in the nose. Only in later versions was the armament improved with additional machine guns mounted in the wings.
