Template information

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9, nicknamed "Dora", was the pinnacle of the piston-engined Fw 190 series. This version was powered by the powerful Junkers Jumo 213A inline engine, which required a significant extension of the forward fuselage and the installation of a trim ring on the vertical tail. Thanks to these modifications, the aircraft achieved excellent performance at high altitudes and became one of the fastest Luftwaffe fighters, able to compete with the most modern Allied aircraft.

Early production aircraft appeared in 1944 with the elite fighter squadron JG 54 "Grünherz", which operated on the northern part of the Eastern Front and in the defense of the Reich. The unit became famous for its specific marking in the form of a green heart on the fuselage and often non-standard camouflage, which was supposed to better camouflage the aircraft over the forested terrain. Although the "Dora" was primarily intended for combat at high altitudes, it proved itself to be a versatile fighter capable of effectively intervening against bomber formations and enemy fighter escorts.
