Under pressure from events in Western Europe in the spring of 1940, American military planners decided to quickly replace the aging M2A4 tank. The result was the new M3 light tank, production of which began in March 1941.
The design used a riveted hull and a 250 horsepower power unit. The main armament of the armored vehicle was a 37 mm cannon. Later production series were equipped with a lower gun turret, which lacked a commander's cupola, and some of them also lacked machine guns mounted on the sides of the vehicle.
In American colors, M3 tanks participated in the fighting in North Africa. However, through Great Britain, they also entered the armament of the Red Army, where they served not only for reconnaissance purposes, but also as fire support for infantry.
