Chevrolet began production of the G506 four-wheel drive trucks in late 1939. These 1.5-ton trucks were equipped with a six-cylinder gasoline engine with a displacement of 3.9 liters and an output of 83 horsepower.
The army designations for these trucks were G7107 (version without winch) and G7117 (version with winch). Most of these trucks were provided to the Allies under the Lend-Lease Act . The trucks were used to transport infantry or ammunition, as artillery gun tractors, ambulances, radio trucks, etc.
The American multi-purpose trailer G-518, also known by the nickname Ben Hur, was designed to transport up to 1000 kg of cargo. In addition to the cargo version, specialized variants were also created, including a tanker for transporting drinking water.
The trucks were most often used in conjunction with the Chevrolet G506, GMC CCKW and many others. 259,064 G-518s were produced, making them a widely used and widespread type among the Allies.
The Ben Hur trailer was named after its main manufacturer, the Ben–Hur Mfg. Co. However, it was also manufactured by a number of other companies between 1941 and 1945.
