The Š-239 was created as a direct successor to the Š-39 with the aim of further improving the flight characteristics and reliability of this successful sports aircraft. The main change was the installation of a more powerful British Pobjoy engine, which gave the aircraft the necessary dynamics while maintaining low operating costs. The overall concept of a high-wing aircraft with a wing above the fuselage was retained, which provided pilots with excellent visibility from the cockpit and made it easier to control the aircraft even for less experienced pilots in the aero clubs of the time.
The aircraft became a symbol of the boom in sports aviation in interwar Czechoslovakia and, thanks to its compact dimensions, was ideal for recreational flying and basic training. Several units were produced under state orders to support aviation, and the machines excelled in their long service life and durability even during intensive use in field conditions.
