The Letov Š-39 was designed by designer Alois Šmolík in the early 1930s as an affordable and easy-to-operate aircraft for the growing network of aero clubs and private pilots. This all-wood parasol-type high-wing aircraft was characterized by a simple design with an open two-seat cockpit and characteristic landing gear with rubber shock absorbers. Thanks to its excellent take-off characteristics and ability to operate from small grassy areas, the aircraft soon gained popularity with the general public, which earned it the folk name after the then popular film starring Vlasta Burian.
Although the aircraft was primarily intended for sport flying, it also achieved several successes in national air competitions and was used to train a new generation of Czechoslovak pilots as part of the "1000 New Pilots" campaign. After the German occupation, some of these aircraft were used for auxiliary tasks, which concluded their history in the turbulent years of World War II. The kit from Kovozávodů Prostějov offers very fine surface details that faithfully imitate the canvas covering of the structure and the subtle struts supporting the main wing above the fuselage.
