The Grumman G-44 Widgeon was developed in the late 1930s as a smaller, more affordable version of the successful Goose, primarily for the civilian market and private owners. This twin-engine, high-wing aircraft with an all-metal, boat-shaped fuselage excelled in its ability to operate from both water and fixed airfields thanks to its retractable wheeled landing gear. However, with the outbreak of World War II, most of the aircraft were taken over by the US Navy and Coast Guard, where they served as light transport, ambulance, and anti-submarine patrol aircraft.
The Widgeon's military service was not limited to the USA, as a number of machines were supplied to the British Royal Navy and other Allied countries under the Lend-Lease agreement. After the war, the aircraft returned to the civilian sector, where, thanks to its reliability and ability to land almost anywhere, it became an icon of transport in remote lake areas and coastal waters.
