Information about the model (Fiat CR.42 Falco):
Building on the success of the CR.32 Freccia, which had proven to be highly reliable and efficient during the Spanish Civil War, the Italian manufacturer Fiat developed the CR.42 Falco in the late 1930s. The single-seat biplane, like its predecessor, featured a fixed landing gear and an open cockpit. However, the airframe used metal alloys and steels, and in particular a partially metal-clad fuselage.
Thanks to its turbocharged air-cooled Fiat A.74 radial engine, the machine was able to reach speeds of 400 km/h. Despite its excellent maneuverability, however, it suffered from the limitations of its biplane design. The Fiat CR.42 was able to successfully confront enemy Gloster Gladiators, but was soon surpassed by faster and more heavily armed monoplanes such as the Hawker Hurricane or the Supermarine Spitfire.
Information about the original (Gloster Sea Gladiator):
The Gloster Gladiator was the absolute pinnacle of biplane fighter aircraft, but despite its undeniable qualities it was hopelessly outdated when it entered service with the RAF. It is true that in the hands of an experienced pilot it was able to destroy most German aircraft, but this was certainly not the case with the feared Bf 109. One area where the Gloster Gladiator performed relatively successfully was, for example, the fight against Ju 87 Stuka dive bombers.
