While General Montgomery commanded the British Eighth Army in North Africa, he received a specially designed staff vehicle, known as Monty's Office Caravan. The vehicle was based on a standard British Leyland Retriever army car, which carried a body that served as a mobile field office.
The interior was divided into two rooms – a small front room that served as a bathroom, and a larger room that contained closets for personal belongings and clothes, a desk with lamps, and a large sofa.
The body, originally mounted on a Lancia 3RO truck, was used by Italian General Bergonzoli. After his vehicle was captured by the British 7th Armoured Division, the living area was removed and mounted on a British Leyland Retriever.
Montgomery also had two other special vehicles at his disposal. One was converted into a mobile dormitory, while the other was used for holding conferences. General Montgomery used these vehicles until the end of the war.
