At the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, most of the Wehrmacht's vehicles were wheeled vehicles of the classic design. These vehicles were well suited for fighting in Europe, which had an extensive network of roads and paved paths.
In the harsh conditions of Russia, with its lack of a network of paved roads and harsh natural conditions, ordinary vehicles were almost useless. Even the four-wheel drive, which was equipped with, for example, the Mercedes-Benz L4500A, did not solve the situation.
Therefore, a special vehicle, the Sd.Kfz.3 Maultier, was developed for the needs of the Wehrmacht. It took the form of a tracked transporter with higher cross-country ability and used the chassis, engine and cabin of the Wehrmacht's most widely used truck, the Opel Blitz.
