In 1934, Panhard began production of the Panhard 178 armored reconnaissance car. These vehicles had a rear-mounted engine, four-wheel drive, and a main armament of a 25mm cannon. Production continued until mid-June 1940, with 527 vehicles built.
The Panhard 178 saw action with French troops in the spring of 1940 and gained an excellent reputation. It was widely considered by military specialists to be one of the best vehicles in its category.
After the defeat of France in June 1940, about 190 of these armored vehicles were incorporated into German forces, while French factories produced several dozen more for the Wehrmacht. The Germans redesignated them Panzerspähwagen P204(f).
Some were converted into command vehicles and carried roof-mounted Hochantenne antennas that covered most of the upper hull area. These modified versions were given the additional designation "Funk" and served both on the Eastern Front and in France.
