Serial production of the ZiL-131 truck, equipped with all-wheel drive, began in the late 1960s. In 1986, a modernized version, the ZiL-131N, was introduced. The vehicle was characterized by high reliability and excellent off-road capabilities.
The basic ZiL-131 model was designed primarily for transporting people or cargo weighing up to 5 tons. At one time, it was the most widespread all-wheel drive army truck. Between 1967 and 1990, almost 1,000,000 of these vehicles were produced.
A significant part of the production consisted of bare chassis, on which various special superstructures or other military equipment were later mounted. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, these vehicles continued to serve in the armies of the CIS countries and around the world.
