At the beginning of World War II, the Japanese Zero outperformed any Allied aircraft on the Pacific battlefield. In the Battle of Midway, the Americans deployed their F4F-4 Wildcats against the A6M2 Zeros. The Zero still had the advantage of better maneuverability and climb rate, but the heavier Wildcat was quicker in a dive, had self-sealing tanks, and an armored cockpit. By the end of 1942, a new A6M3 version with "cut off" wingtips appeared on the battlefield. Newer, stronger, and better-armored aircraft, such as Corsairs and Hellcats, gradually gained the upper hand.
