The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk formed the backbone of the USAAC fighter force in the first half of World War II and was massively supplied to the Allies under the Lend-Lease program. The P-40K variant was an attempt to increase the performance of the aircraft by installing a more powerful Allison V-1710-73 engine with automatic boost control. Due to the increased torque of the powerful engine, the area of the fin was increased in the first series with a characteristic transition into the fuselage, which became a typical distinguishing feature of this version.
The K-version Warhawks served primarily in the harsh conditions of the Pacific, in China with the famous Flying Tigers, and in North Africa under the British designation Kittyhawk Mk III. Although they gradually lost ground to more modern aircraft in pure fighter combat, their robustness and powerful armament made them excellent fighters for direct support of ground troops.
