Grumman F4F Wildcat was the beginning of the Second World War, the most important airborne fighter aircraft that served with the USMC Air Force, U.S. Navy and the FAA as Martlet also. The latter two entities operated from aircraft carriers. Until the arrival of their successors F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair in 1943 was the only machine in service with air forces of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, which he was able to at least match the Japanese dig. Even after the advent of more powerful successors remained (in variant FM Wildcat) in service of escort aircraft carriers for the rest of the war.
