In late 1942, the Japanese Imperial Navy reqested that a long distance attack bomber. It was to be faster than existing fighters, and should be able to bomb distant enemy targets with a bomb load of 4.000 kg. Mitsubishi and Kawanishi were originally tasked with the project; however, their production capacity was at its peak, so Nakajima aircraft was given the contract.
The prototype N-40 G8N1 made its first flight on 23 October 1944, with the 2nd plane flying on 12 April 1945, and the 3rd Renzan flying the following June. A fourth Renzan was built but the war ended prior to flight, and was shipped back to the USA for evaluation. Testing proved that G8N1 was well designed and easy to fly, with excellent range and flight characteristics.
