The beginning of its creation dates back to the turn of the years 1942-1943, when, after the battle of Stalingrad, it was clear that the army needs an effective weapon for the destruction of buildings and fortifications, which were used to defend the city. The result was a machine that was equipped with a missile launcher RW-61, which was originally intended for battleships as anti-submarine weapon. The chassis was due to the weight of the rocket used heavy tank Tiger I. Charge was 1.4 meter long missile, which had its own motor. With this rocket weighing 345 kg was handled through the mini. Do tower armor to fit 12 pieces of these missiles in storage space and one rocket "roller" conveyor and exceptionally even one was inserted in the barrel. In production, the Sturmtiger got up in the spring of 1944. Its official name was "Rakettenwerfer 38 cm RW 61 auf Sturmmösser Tiger". Only 18 pieces were built.
