The BMW car manufacturer participated in the World Manufacturers' Championship in 1976 with the model 3.0 CSL. Although Porsche took the titles in division 3 (for cars with engine capacity over 3000 cm³) and in division 2 (for cars with engine capacity 2000–3000 cm³), BMW did not give up and returned to the fight in 1977 with the model 320i Racing. This car, based on the series two-door sedan 320i from 1975, was equipped with a powerful 2000 cm³ sixteen-valve inline four-cylinder engine with an output of 298 horsepower. The aerodynamics of the body underwent testing and modifications at the Italian studio Pininfarina; among other things, the car was fitted with a prominent front spoiler and rear wing. The 320i Racing made its debut in the opening race of the 1977 season, which was the twenty-four-hour race in Daytona, and subsequently engaged in a fierce battle with the Porsche 935 in the two-liter class.
