The Sd.Kfz.251 was the basic armored personnel carrier of the German army. The development of the armored vehicle took place at the Hanomag company as the HKL6p type. The nine-ton vehicle carried ten infantrymen, a machine gunner, commander and driver. Like the Sd.Kfz.250, it was armed as standard with two MG34 or MG42 machine guns. The type began to be used in 1939, when it was mainly deployed in tank divisions.
However, its inclusion in other units had to wait, because the German arms industry was not up to the high pace of armament, so the units were only armed with it later in the war.
The transporter, like the Sd.Kfz.250, was continuously modified, resulting in a number of different versions. The armoured vehicles bearing the designation Sd.Kfz.251/3 represented a command variant equipped with various types of radio stations or even devices for covert radio operations.
