The AMX-30 became the main battle tank of the French army during the Cold War, and its serial production began in 1966. During development, the designers gave priority to high speed and maneuverability at the expense of heavy armor. They believed that with the advent of modern anti-tank missiles, thick armor would lose its meaning. The main armament was a highly accurate 105 mm CN-105-F1 rifled gun.
The tank was powered by a twelve-cylinder Hispano-Suiza engine, which provided the machine with excellent mobility on paved roads and in difficult terrain. In addition to France, this successful type was exported to many countries around the world, including Spain, Greece and the Middle East. In service with many armies, it underwent a number of extensive modernizations and also took part in combat operations during the Persian Gulf War in the early 1990s.
