The Fiat L6/40 light tank was widely used by the Italian Regio Esercito during World War II. It was designed in the late 1930s to perform advanced reconnaissance and infantry support tasks. The crew was two, a driver and a commander who also operated the gun. It entered service in 1941, had good speed and could be used against light vehicles and lightly protected targets, while it was ineffective against heavily armored vehicles. The main armament of the L6 tank consisted of a 20 mm Breda 20/65 Mod. 1935 cannon mounted in a turret and an 8 mm Breda 38 coaxial machine gun. The L6/40 light tank was used on several fronts, including North Africa, the Balkans and the Eastern Front.
