Template information
In 1942, when fierce fighting was taking place not only in the Pacific, Grumman tried to take advantage of the experience of American pilots with the Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter. Originally, it intended to innovate this machine, but in the end it decided on a completely new design of the aircraft, which was named the Grumman F6F Hellcat.
The first prototype of the aircraft, designated XF6F-1, took off on June 26, 1942. The Grumman F6F Hellcat aircraft, together with the F4U Corsair, gained a dominant position in air combat at sea.
Hellcats were credited with 3/4 of all enemy aircraft killed in the Pacific (various sources give either 5,155 or 5,156 Japanese aircraft killed). Although the Hellcat was twice as heavy as the Zero, it compensated for this disadvantage with its powerful armament, robust construction, and good passive protection for the pilot and tanks.
