The Westland Wessex was a British helicopter manufactured by Westland. It was a licensed variant of the American Sikorsky S-58, distinguished by the use of a turboshaft engine. The first user of this machine was the Royal Navy, with later versions designed for the Royal Air Force. It was the first helicopter of the British Fleet Air Arm designed from the outset as an anti-submarine, and the first series-produced heavy helicopter powered by a free-running turboshaft engine.
