The de Havilland Mosquito was a British multi-role fighter aircraft that, since its introduction in 1941, was a tough nut to crack for Luftwaffe fighters, which it mostly evaded due to its high speed. It was used as a light bomber, night fighter and reconnaissance aircraft. It was an ingeniously designed machine, made almost entirely of wood.
In 1930, when design work on the Mosquito began, metal was a popular and widely used construction material. However, designers anticipated that metals would become scarce during wartime, and it was still the case that a wooden structure would be lighter than a metal one. The Mosquito was originally designed as an unarmed bomber, but a number of different versions were eventually developed.
The FB Mk.VI variant debuted in the spring of 1943. The fighter-bomber had a powerful armament consisting of four 7.7 mm machine guns and four 20 mm cannons mounted in the lower fuselage. The aircraft could also carry four 500 lb bombs. The Mosquito's high top speed allowed it to be used in a wide range of demanding missions, including raids on key targets in Germany. It is believed that until the arrival of the Messerschmitt Me 262 fighter, the German Luftwaffe had no adequate answer to the Mosquito.
