The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V was the RAF's main response to the arrival of the modernised German Messerschmitt Bf 109F in 1941. The Mk.Vb variant was fitted with a B-wing, carrying a combined armament of two 20mm cannons and four machine guns, giving the aircraft considerable firepower. This version became the most widely produced Spitfire variant and saw service in all major theatres from Western Europe to North Africa.
The "Mid" version included aircraft produced during 1941, which already had improved armour and often a newer type of cockpit front plate as standard. Spitfires Mk.Vb Mid formed the backbone of Fighter Command during offensive operations over occupied France, where they clashed with elite Luftwaffe units. The robust construction and excellent maneuverability made this aircraft one of the most respected fighters of its time.
