Send a questionPlastic kit of the Boeing NB-52D Stratofortress mother plane and the North American X-15 rocket plane in the limited Platinum Edition.
Template information
The Boeing NB-52D Stratofortress served as a specially modified mothership designed to launch experimental rockets into the upper atmosphere. The aircraft underwent extensive modifications that included the installation of a massive pylon under the right wing and a cutout in the trailing edge to accommodate a vertical tailplane. This flying laboratory allowed the U.S. Air Force and NASA to conduct key tests that pushed the boundaries of human knowledge in the fields of aerodynamics and space exploration.
The star of these tests was the North American X-15, the fastest manned rocket plane of its time, capable of reaching the edge of space and speeds exceeding Mach 6. The combination of these two machines represents one of the most fascinating chapters in the history of aviation, paving the way for future shuttle programs. Piloting such a loaded set required extraordinary concentration and precise coordination between the crew of the mother plane and the pilot of the shuttle, which was launched at altitudes of about fifteen kilometers above the Earth's surface.
