The HMMWV, or High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, is an American military vehicle. The vehicle is commonly known by the name Humvee, which was a corruption of the official abbreviation by the American military.
The Humvee is widely used by all five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, the U.S. National Guard, and other militaries. The vehicle began its development in 1979, when the U.S. Army issued official requirements for a new off-road vehicle to replace the aging Willys Jeeps and various civilian vehicle conversions.
The contract was eventually awarded to AM General, and the Humvee entered service with the US Army in 1985. Its development continues to this day. It became known to the American public in connection with Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf.
Arnold Schwarzenegger (owner of 5 Hummer cars) also showed interest in this vehicle and persuaded AM General to produce a civilian version, which is known as the Hummer H1. Initially, HMMWVs used a 6.2 liter engine and a three-speed transmission, and from 1995 onwards, a 6.5 liter engine and a 4-speed transmission.
