Plastic kit of the Soviet World War II fighter aircraft Ilyushin IL-2 Šturmovik.

Template information

The Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik was a fighter aircraft used by the Soviet Union during World War II. The creation of this fighter was very important to the Soviets, so much so that Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was personally interested in its development and final form.

By the end of the war, more than 36,000 aircraft had been built, making the Šturmovik one of the most mass-produced aircraft in the world. The Il-2 featured heavy armor that was integrated directly into the airframe, providing excellent protection for the cockpit and important parts of the aircraft, such as the engine and fuel tank.

Serial production of the Il-2 began in March 1941, when it was still a single-seat version that lacked the originally intended rear gunnery. However, due to the heavy losses that accompanied the early combat use of the Il-2, it was necessary to reconsider the design of the machine. The two-seat layout with a gunner on board was therefore brought back into play. The wing geometry of the new machines had to be changed, as the modification resulted in a change in the position of the center of gravity. Serial production of the two-seat Il-2 was ready at the end of 1943.
