The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German fighter aircraft designed under the direction of W. Messerschmitt at Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in the mid-1930s. It was the standard fighter type of the Luftwaffe throughout the duration of World War II. From 1942, it was partially replaced by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, and towards the end of the war by the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter. In total, approximately 34,000 machines of all versions were produced.
