The British Aerospace Sea Harrier is a STOVL naval jet fighter, reconnaissance and attack aircraft, developed from the Hawker Siddeley Harrier. It entered service with the British Royal Navy in April 1980, under the designation Sea Harrier FRS.1. The aircraft was a subsonic aircraft. The main task of the type was to defend Royal Navy aircraft carriers. A total of 111 aircraft were built, with the last units being retired from service in 2006.

The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Plus Harrier II was a joint project between the United States and the United Kingdom to address operational deficiencies in the first generation Hawker Siddeley Harrier. Initial efforts focused on a larger, more powerful Pegasus engine that would dramatically improve the Harrier's capabilities. Due to budgetary constraints, the United Kingdom abandoned the project in 1975. The aircraft retained the general layout of its predecessor, but incorporated a number of extensive improvements.
