The Douglas C-47A/B Skytrain was an American twin-engine transport aircraft, which was a military version of the Douglas DC-3 transport aircraft, known under the designation RAF Douglas C.Mk.I to IV Dakota. The aircraft served not only as a cargo aircraft, but also as an airborne aircraft under the name Douglas C-53 Skytrooper, glider tow, reconnaissance, rescue and training TC-47B. The basic designation of the US Navy for these aircraft was R4D with an added number according to the version. It participated in World War II (Operations Market Garden, Overlord, Husky, Varsity and Avalanche), the Korean War and Vietnam. 10,654 units were produced in the USA, over 2,000 of them were manufactured under license in the USSR as the Lisunov Li-2, another 485 were manufactured in Japan by the Nakajima and Showa companies. The type was assigned to the post-war Czechoslovak Air Force under the designation D 47, and forty of the 72 purchased C-47s flew with the Czechoslovak Air Force.
